 Kaj Leo Johannesen was elected Prime Minister on the 26th of September 2008.
As Prime Minister, his responsibilites include constitutional matters and administration.
Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen was born on 28 August 1964 in Tórshavn. He is the son of Leo Hans Johannesen (father, deceased 1991) and Karin Holm Johannesen, both from Mykines. He is married to Jórun Bærentsen (maiden name). They have three sons.
After he finished school, at the age of 14, Kaj Leo Johannesen started work as a fisherman. In 1986 he got his diploma as a Shipmaster from Føroya Sjómansskúli (Centre of Maritime Studies). He has captained fishing vessels and freighters. He has also worked as a car salesman.
In 1989 he was employed by Faroe Seafood and from 1995 to 1997 he was sales manager at Kósin (major fish processing factory in the Faroes). Since 1997 he has had his own business.
Kaj Leo Johannesen has been active in sports since he was a child, mainly as a football goalkeeper. From 1984 to 2000 he was goalkeeper for the first team at Havnar Bóltfelag (HB) and holds the record for most matches for the club. From 1988 to 1994 he was part of the Faroese international team, for which he got seven caps.
Kaj Leo Johannesen became a member of the Faroese Unionist Party in 1988. He put himself up for election for the Løgting (national parliament) for the first time in 1994. A supplementary seat meant that he was a Member of Parliament for a period the same year. From 1996 to 2000 he was in the Tórshavn City Council. He was elected to the Løgting for the first time in 2002 and has been re-elected at subsequent elections.
Since 2004 Kaj Leo Johannesen has been leader of the Unionist Party. In the period 2003-2004 he was deputy chairman of the Government Committee of the Faroese Parliament and a member of the Trade and Industry Committee. From 2004 to 2008 he was chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and a member of the Finance Committee.
